Antartica is called the white continent because it is the only continent in the world which remauins frozen through the yera .Itsi coverded with a thick sheet of ice which is 2 to 5 km deep .It is therefore called the white continent.
Antartica is the 5th largest continent in the world.it is surrounded by a vast cold ocean called the southern ocean .This ocean is so called that thesurface-water temperaturerarely raises upto 4degres elciuc .It is because of this severe cold that this continent still remains inhabitant .No human beng can evr think of living here permanately .
Antatica was first dicovered in 1820 but the exploration only stared in the 20th centuary because there was no new tecnologies in the 18th centure . Explorer like Amunden ,palmer ,William smith etc hv lso dicovered a part of Antartica .U.S.A has taken alead by establishing a mini-city clled McMurdo.
Antartica forthe most part is mountanious , volcano which is 3,795m high .
In antartica summers last fromnovember t febuary and the temperature rarely raises upto 0degree celisius . Winters are cold and icy blow for a larger pat of the year andthe degree in the south pole raises upto -95 degrees celcius .
the land of Antartica is covered with a thick sheet of ce .therefire it is impossiblE to exploit the resoureses .But some scientist say that there large tresure under the ice like coal iron and copper etc .Scientist feel that the ice can be towed down the desert lands of the earth to solve the water shortages in Arabia ,western austrlia and the saharah,etc..
Antartica is a cold desert which cannot support normal natural vegetation. Only mosses and lichens grow in some parts which ar not enough to support any animal life. there are pengunies ,seal and several other birs.A smallfish named Krill is found in plety .Scientist hv set up bvarious intruments to study the panomena of nature .Very delicate insturments are kept over there to record the important data of the earth's atmosphere .It is because of this Antartic ais called the 'CONTINENT OF SCIENCE'
